Antique Dutch Silver Snuff Box

€500.00

A flat rectangular box with a hinged lid, reeded all over with fine parallel lines. The lid has a notched edge, and the black left in the grooves sharpens every line against the worn silver on the ridges. The hinge runs flush along the back, and the lid closes neatly.

Silver, 833 standard. Fully hallmarked with the Dutch lion, the Minerva head duty mark, date letter E for 1814, and maker's mark BE. Netherlands, 1814.

Made for snuff or tobacco at the start of the 19th century. Still useful for pills, rings or a few cards.

12 x 7 cm, height 2.5 cm closed. 175 g.

Condition: good antique condition. Tarnish to the interior with small green spots near the hinge, light scratches and surface wear consistent with over two hundred years of use. Hinge sound, lid closes well.
